After several years in the California Assembly, insurance commissioner candidate Dave Jones says he has the chops to head the California Department of Insurance. During his time in the assembly he has introduced numerous insurance bills including legislation that would reform the governance of State Compensation Insurance Fund and regulate disputes between workers’ compensation insurance companies and their policyholders.

In this interview, he touches on such topics as the governance of SCIF, workers’ comp rates, and the future of health insurance in California under Obamacare. He also weighs in on the proper role of the Workers’ Compensation Insurance Rating Bureau and what the public and small businesses need to know about how workers’ comp rates are determined. Jones also shares his opinions on a memorandum of understanding (MOU) between WCIRB and the Department of Insurance and the importance of brokers and agents in advocating for consumers, especially for State Fund policyholders.

He also answers questions about the regulation of self-insured groups whether the regulation of SIGs should be taken out of the Department of Industrial Relations and put into the Department of Insurance.

Jones also provides a glimpse into his polling and how he thinks he stacks up to the current insurance commissioner Steve Poizner and his Republican opponent, Mike Villines.
