Mike Villines is hoping that his experience as a businessman will resonate with voters, especially during these tough economic times. He’s authored insurance bills during his time in the assembly including health care legislation dealing with pre-existing conditions.
In this interview, he discusses how, as a former small employer, he can relate to the importance of keeping workers’ comp rates low, so employers don’t leave the state. He also explains his viewpoint of making sure that out-of-state insurance carriers are solvent. He discusses such topics as the role of the Workers’ Compensation Insurance Rating Bureau (WCIRB), the reliability of workers’ comp rates and transparency in government (Bagley-Keene Act).
He takes on health care and, and if elected, how best to position California for the implementation of Obamacare, including the establishment of health care exchanges.
He hits on topics such as his polling verses his opponent Dave Jones, the impact of the Meg Whitman campaign, and how the current insurance commissioner, Steve Poizner is tackling such things as fraud. He also shares his opinions on the staff at the Department of Insurance and what impresses him about the Department under Poizner.
He candidly answers questions about the insurance industry’s view of his campaign, independent expenditure campaigns and the impact of the Chamber of Commerce on his campaign.
