Alabama decedent’s family awarded $750K for wrongful termination

Alabama has the nation’s lowest rate of compensation for certain types of workplace injuries. Kenneth Stewart, an Alabama man who died from a heart attack in 2019, sued his employer for workers’ compensation and wrongful termination, saying the company retaliated against him for seeking legal help in his shoulder injury case. A judge last month ordered the company to pay $750,000 to Stewart’s family. AL.com

 

Ohio: Youngstown’s budget proposal includes equipment purchases

The Youngstown City Council today will consider approving a $200 million city budget that includes about $2.3 million for new equipment purchases and improvement projects. The equipment and improvement work is being paid from unused money the city received from the federal Coronavirus Aid, Relief and Economic Security (CARES) Act and state workers’ compensation refunds, says the city’s finance director. The city received $5.3 million from the CARES Act and $1.89 million in workers’ comp refunds. Youngstown Vindicator

 

Upstate New York contractor charged with workers’ compensation violations

A 41-year-old Albany, New York construction company owner, who was contracted to work on a project at the University at Albany, has been charged with a felony after several alleged workers’ compensation violations, according to the New York State Inspector General. The agency says it found that he employed six people after November 22, 2020, without securing workers’ compensation insurance coverage. News 10
