Florida: Volusia County to cover heart transplant for former jail worker

Following a court challenge, taxpayers will cover the cost of a former correctional officer’s 2013 heart transplant operation if Volusia County, Florida officials approve a $430,000 worker’s compensation settlement. The transplant was performed a year after the officer’s retirement. The county had contended that his job couldn’t be linked to his cardiac problems. Daytona Beach News-Journal

 

Contractor sentenced to prison for employee’s fatal fall from roof

A construction contractor who failed to provide safety equipment to a 39-year-old employee who fatally fell from a third-story roof in November 2017 on his second day on the job has been sentenced to three years in prison for charges that include failure to carry workers’ compensation insurance and involuntary manslaughter.
