New York: Two arrested for not providing workers’ comp on construction projects

Oregon lawmakers considering bill targeting violence against healthcare employees

Oregon Workers’ Compensation data show that claims in health care involving violence rose from 309 in 2013 to 536 in 2020. Anecdotally, caregivers say that hostility from patients is at an all-time high during the Covid-19 pandemic. Oregon lawmakers will consider a bipartisan bill this session that expands the crime of assault in the third degree to apply to someone who intentionally, knowingly or recklessly causes physical injury to a person working in a hospital while performing their official duties. Virginia: Newman reappointed to Workers’ Compensation Commission

The General Assembly has reappointed Workers’ Compensation Commissioner R. Ferrell Newman to a six-year term. The Virginia Senate and House of Delegates unanimously passed resolutions last month to give Newman a new full term on the Virginia Workers’ Compensation Commission. Virginia Lawyers Weekly

 

North Carolina Labor Department releases workplace fatality count for 2021

Struck-by incidents caused the largest number of non COVID-19 work-related deaths in 2021 in North Carolina, based on preliminary information released today by the N.C. Department of Labor. The services industry suffered the most work-related fatalities with 24 in 2021, two more than in 2020. Most of the services industry deaths were due to COVID-19. The construction industry had the second highest number of work-related deaths with 15, a decrease of 12 from the previous year. Avery Journal
