Hoosier healthcare employees saw spike in workplace injury, illness in 2020

In a trend not unique to Indiana, data shows Hoosier State healthcare employees saw a noticeable jump in workplace injuries and illness in 2020, likely due to the exposure doctors and nurses had to COVID-19 in the first year of the pandemic. Overall, only about 3 in every 100 full-time workers had an on-the-job injury or illness in Indiana, continuing a years-long decline; but about 7 out of 100 healthcare employees had a work-related incident, a 50 percent increase from the year before. Kansas high court orders Wichita company to pay workers comp for uninsured subcontractor

Affirming both the appellate and district courts, the Kansas Supreme Court has ordered a Wichita company to pay for the workers’ compensation of an employee at one of its uninsured subcontracted companies. Court records show the Kansas Workers’ Compensation Fund had filed a suit against a contractor to collect workers’ comp, which an administrative law judge had ordered the fund to pay an injured employee after learning his immediate employer, a subcontractor, was insolvent and lacked workers’ compensation insurance. Ohio: Calls rise but number of Norwalk fire service injuries remain down

The amount of money the city of Norwalk, Ohio, spent covering medical bills and lost wages for injured firemen dropped for the second consecutive year in 2021, according to city and fire department officials. A fire official injured firefighters received $330,000 in workers’ compensation benefits last year, a 45 percent decrease from the $606,000 in benefits distributed in 2020. Middletown Press
