Florida commissioner decreases workers’ comp rates

Florida Insurance Commissioner David Altmaier has issued a final order granting approval to the National Council on Compensation Insurance for an overall decrease of 6.6 percent for workers’ compensation rates. The new rate applies to both new and renewal policies effective in Florida as of January 1, 2021. The decision is supported both by Governor Ron DeSantis and state CFO Jimmy Patronis. A 44-year-old former Verizon employee has been arrested after an investigation by New York officials found she allegedly lied about injuries to collect more than $19,000 in workers’ compensation. Video surveillance allegedly showed that last year she was exercising in gyms and conducting errands with no apparent distress, despite having claimed carpal-tunnel related injuries.
