Federal firemen will have an easier time filing for workers’ comp

The director of the Labor Department’s Office of Workers’ Compensation announced Wednesday his office has labeled a number of cancers and other chronic heart and lung conditions as “high risk” for federal firemen, effectively waiving the requirement that they submit additional evidence to prove a causal relationship between their work and their condition. In order to qualify as a “high risk” claim, employees must be diagnosed with one of certain cancers, and must have been engaged in firefighting for at least five years and they must be diagnosed with one of those conditions within 10 years of their last exposure to firefighting. Canada: Ontario officials considering raising injured workers’ comp

The Ontario government says it is looking into raising workers’ compensation for injured employees, who currently are paid 85 percent of their pre-accident pay. The proposed change wouldn’t take effect until after the provincial election, however. Toronto Sun
