Ohio man fined $100,000 for workers’ comp fraud

A Licking County, Ohio man has been found guilty of fraud and fined $100,000 after investigators found he owned and operated a business while receiving disability benefits. NBC 4 (Columbus)

 

OWCP moves toward recognizing presumptive diseases for wildland firemen

A new Office of Workers’ Compensation Programs bulletin establishes a list of cancers and medical conditions for which the fireman does not have to submit proof that their disease was caused by an on the job injury. The requirements to qualify are that the condition must be diagnosed by a doctor, the person was engaged in fire protection activities for at least 5 years, and the diagnosis must have occurred no more than 10 years after employment. If these requirements are met, the employee’s claim would be deemed “high-risk” and qualify for expedited processing. Wildfire Today

 

Three cancers added to list of covered work-related cancers for British Columbia firemen

Three types of cancer: ovarian, cervical and penile, are being added to B.C.’s existing list of cancers frequently suffered by firemen that are covered by workers’ compensation in British Columbia. If a fireman is diagnosed with one of the now 16 listed cancers after working as a firefighter for a certain period, they will be able to access workers’ comp without having to prove the cancer is directly work-related.
